Fashion, food, lifestyle and culture in St Albans
This is Guest Blog Post.
I’d like to introduce the newest and youngest member of the Style in my City team, the beautiful and brilliant Vicky Taylor. Vicky is a local St Albans girl now busy studying a Media and Communications degree at Bournemouth University. Vicky loves all things St Albans and gets to keep a little piece of home with her with her posts for this blog. I am chuffed that Vicky will be writing for us regularly. Enjoy!
Every girl has her own fairytale fantasy. It is particularly difficult to escape our Cinderella-style fantasies at this time of year because Hollywood’s finest have been gracing the red carpet dressed in gowns so fabulous, they would make even Disney’s princesses weep.
The Screen Actors Guild Awards last week led to the showcasing of an endless amount of jaw-dropping lace, sequin and silk dresses. However, it was the rainbow of blues donned by our favourite leading ladies that we just couldn’t keep our eyes off of.
Jennifer Lawrence, Nicole Kidman, Amanda Seyfried and more wore everything from an elegant royal navy, to a more eye-catching electric blue.
But there’s no need to turn green with envy because after a little bit of digging around in our very own STA, you’d be surprised to discover that this A-list trend can be introduced to your life at a very friendly budget.
Try taking a trip to Christopher Place as Hobbs has a few numbers that are perfect for any black-tie event you may be lucky to have coming up. Opt for their Tegan maxi dress for a simple style that is elegantly refined at only £179.
This gown comes in several colours including a bold blue. It also nods to another red carpet trend with its strapless bodice and Grecian styling.
Wonderful local hair pro and salon-owner Sarah Iovane advises adding some curls to your hair and pulling the tendrils into a loose bun in order to perfect the sophisticated yet un-fussy look, which would finish of this look perfectly.
If you’re hoping for something a bit more glamorous, then the tiered Sabine maxi dress is reminiscent of Old Hollywood glamour and comes in a much deeper colour.
This classic style is very similar to Jennifer Lawrence’s Dior Haute Couture gown, and can become a piece of vintage perfection if worn with side-swept, softly curled hair and striking red lipstick. The best part of all? Achieve this stunning look for only £50 because the dress is currently on sale (down from £199).
But the fairest blue gown of them all has to be the Dressing Room’s Butter By Nadia. Who needs a fairy godmother when this sapphire blue “miracle dress” is guaranteed to make absolutely anybody look fabulous?
The top half is convertible, meaning you can wear it as a strapless, backless, one-shoulder, crossed-over, simple or complex look. Whatever your body shape, whatever your style, this dress can and will work for you.
At £299 the dress comes with a handy leaflet indicating the many, many different ways it can be worn. You’ll feel like you’ve brought a completely new outfit every time you wear it.
If you’re simply going for cocktails with the girls, then the tried, tested and deeply trusted Topshop is a good place to go.
At £50 this cobalt blue dress has capped sleeves and a dip-hem, ensuring it’s the ultimate in up-to-date fashion yet fun, young and modest at the same time.
Furthermore, the use of paneling and a skater-style skirt means it’s flattering on pretty much any body shape. Pair with some black or nude heels to complete the chic style, or try wearing a chunky black knit-cardigan to turn this into a cute piece of daytime attire.
Another good place to visit if you’re on the hunt for some daytime dresses is the glorious treasure trove that is Chloe James. Their knee-length pastel-blue shift dress is beautifully simple, with a side-knot design giving it a modern twist and a deeply flattering shape. This dress is also on sale, dropping from £125 to a slightly unbelievable £38.
Alternatively, why not try something a little more adventurous? Chloe James is the only place in St. Albans where you will find any of Samantha Sung’s stunning designs.
As a woman who believes in simplicity, femininity and romance, Sung’s line somehow manages to be retro yet contemporary, sophisticated yet whimsical. It’s perfection.
Chloe James holds a particularly charming variation of Sung’s infamous Audrey design for around £395. The deep navy dress incorporates our favourite modern trend, the print, by bearing a flurry of charismatic white swallows across its classic shirt-dress silhouette.
Try wearing either of these Chloe James options with a pair of nude ballerina pumps, such as the Marbles heeled ones you can get from Topshop for £24. This neutral colour is a perfect compliment to any shade of blue, and will ensure the overall ensemble is playfully modern and casual.
Whether it’s a special event, a day at the office or just a spot of lunch, this red-carpet trend is a supreme winner that can be worn on all occasions. So hit the shops and have a bit of fun because there is absolutely nothing sad about the colour blue this season.
*This shopping trip was done w/c Monday 4th February, prices may have altered since then, especially sale items and some may no longer be in store.
