7 dates with 7 pairs of Dressing Room Denim

Finding that perfect pair of jeans is like finding the perfect mate. It is no easy feat. There are so many options out there, how on earth do you pick the right one for you? You’re looking for that perfect fit. Something that makes you feel amazing, but that also has potential for a long term presence in your life.  It’s a love affair like no other…but where on earth do you start?

The gorgeous crew at The Dressing Room kindly invited me to play denim dress up in their boutique extraordinaire for their Denim Dedication Month, so I took this opportunity to try a few pieces on for size- for the sake of my loosely fitting analogy, jean speed dating if you will.

So,

7 For All Mankind, Gwenevere Skinny Jeans- Blue Black, £185.00

First up, was this lovely pair from 7 For All Mankind. This is not a typical denim finish. The fabric is stretchy, soft and silky to touch, the love child between velveteen and chord. It moulds to your body shape beautifully and I love the fact that it stopped at the ankle for me.

Perfect for those who: Love a skinny jean, but are looking for an alternative, smarter version.

Team with: Beautiful blouse or statement ‘T’, stacked bracelets, a well cut jacket, killer heels and a clutch.

Hudson Jeans, Collin Skinny Jean- Stockport Navy, £199.00

Next up, was the Hudson Collins Skinny jean, aka the Wonderbra of jeans. They hold your toushie up like a dream and the dinky pocket detail, is neat and cute, drawing more attention to your pert booty. They hold you in brilliantly, but are remarkably comfortable. The jeans have a good rise in the front and the graduated fade in the denim is as flattering as it is lovely.

Perfect for those who: Wear jeans every day. They are so comfortable and gorgeous. My top pick and favourite.

Team with: Print T-shirt and some chunky knit, or a gorgeous leather jacket, ankle boots and a statement chunky necklace.

Hudson Jeans, Nico Mid Rise Skinny Jean- Morrissey, £210.00

Next up, was another pair from Hudson, this time the Mid Rise Nico style. I thought I wouldn’t like this higher midrise at the front, but actually loved it. This held me in in all the right places, whilst smoothing out all the rest. Flattering and grown up, this lighter denim is a good choice for Spring. If the pair above were the bad boy you lust after, then these are the well brought, sweet boy that you take home to your mother.

Perfect for those who: Have a ladylike style. This pair is neat and feminine.

Team with: This season’s must have pastel colours in T-shirt, blouse or Jacket. Add a colourful print scarf and a lovely pair of flats for casual spring elegance.

Hudson Jeans, Beth Baby Bootcut Jean, £205.00

Sticking with Hudson, we ventured into another cut, the Baby Bootcut. This summer wash colour was a welcome change to my usual dark denim pick. I am a sucker for the skinny jean and thought it unlikely to veer outside of my comfort zone, but I love loved this pair. The Bootcut, wasn’t so exaggerated that it felt too far removed from the skinny, but as the slightly quirky guy in the corner, I felt intrigued to try this new style on for size. So comfy too.

Perfect for those: Who have a slightly more relaxed style.

Team with: A loose print T-shirt, stacked bracelets and print scarf. MUST team it with heels, to really accentuate the Bootleg cut.

J Brand, Maria High Rise Skinny Jean- Hewson, £200.00

Leaving the Hudson brand behind, Charlotte, the perfect denim guide, steered me to the J Brand collection with this Maria High Rise pair. Firstly, I came up a size smaller (I will love you forever J-Brand) so they fit like a glove. Despite being told that these were a best seller, these were actually my least favourite pair. They fit well and the cut and colour were lovely, but I found the fabric thin and not so comfy.

Perfect for those who: Love showing off their curves in a skinny jean. They will give, but they put the skin tight in skinny.

Team with: A loose fitting top, long statement necklace and some gorge wedges, just to give you some height and to keep your toush pert.

J Brand, 1214 Aidan Slouchy Boyfriend Jean- Lakespur, £269.00

Next up, was another treat from J Brand, a complete curve ball for me, the Aidan Slouchy Boyfriend Cut. This is the guy that you spotted a few tables down and had already ruled out, but he sat down next at our table, so you had to give him his obligatory 3 minutes- and I am glad that he did. These were great, oh so cool, rough round the edges. I was shocked as to how much I liked them. It felt so liberating to be in loose fitting jeans.

Perfect for those who: Have a more relaxed style. Great if you have a slimmer frame as they will drape off your waist beautifully.

Team with: A cool print T shirt and a leather jacket. You could contrast these with a cool summer heel or wedge. Or alternatively, keep along the casual look and team with a trendy trainer or flat pair of pumps.

And finally…..

Paige Denim, Verdugo Ultra Skinny Jeans- Finnley, £199.00

My last date was with a pair from the brand Paige. After seeing this brand, along so many of the other brands that The Dressing Room stock in last month’s British Vogue, I was intrigued to see what the hype was about. This Skyline Straight Leg was again a style that I simply ruled out as being shapeless, however, I was pleasantly surprised to find that they fit like a dream and were so very comfortable. Tighter on the bottom and then tapering out to a slightly looser fit all the way down the leg, I could see this fastly becoming a wardrobe favourite.

Perfect for those who: Have a beautiful neat style but run around all day and so need something a little more comfortable than a skinny.

Team with: Definitely more of a day time jean, so team with this season’s brightly coloured treats, as bold block colours will look grand with this hue of blue denim. Keep it light and fresh.

British Vogue Feature on Denim, featuring most brands that The Dressing Room have in store.

So there you have it. 7 dates with 7 very different pieces of denim. I thought I knew what I was looking for, but it turns out that there is some benefit in playing the field a little before you settle down.

I would say that if you think you are not a ‘jeans person’ then you simply have not found the right jeans for you. Pop into The Dressing Room and let one of the lovely stylists help you. You wouldn’t cut your own hair (..or good lord at least you NEVER should girls) so go pro, get some advice and you will leave with the perfect pair for you. They have a huge range on offer, colours, patterns, textures… I merely touched the surface, with sizes starting from a size 6 to a 16 and many half sizes in between.  Prices range from £42 up to around £270- it’s a commitment worth investing in.

Their host of in house stylists will help you find your perfect match.

My knowledgeable denim matchmaker Charlotte’s Top Tips when shopping for jeans are:

  • Think about your lifestyle, whether you’re stuck behind a desk or running around all day, you should pick a pair that will be suitable and keep you comfortable all day.
  • Consider your body shape and find a style that compliments your frame. There are no rules here, it’s all about trying them on and finding the right brand and style for you.
  • Buying jeans is trial and error, you must try them on to find the perfect pair. There are no shortcuts!

For more jean information, tips, treats and exclusive giveaways, make sure you take a look at all the other blog posts by The Dressing Room this month in lieu of their Denim Dedication month.

So, just like finding your perfect mate, don’t settle, be patient, play the field a little and then, before you even realise it, you’ll have found your perfect pair. It’s a great romance that shouldn’t be rushed and hopefully you and your jeans can live happily ever after…. until next season at least 😉
